The future of manufacturing is human-centric

In today’s evolving manufacturing environment, companies face increasing pressure to improve safety and efficiency, retain skilled workers, and adopt digital transformation. To meet these challenges, a leading manufacturer partnered with Nottingham Spirk to develop a product system designed to redefine human-machine collaboration.

While Industry 4.0 brought automation and connectivity to manufacturing, Industry 5.0 shifts the focus back to people, emphasizing interaction between humans and intelligent systems.

From insights to innovation

To develop a system that meets real-world needs, our team first spent time on the factory floor, observing workflows and speaking directly with frontline workers. These insights revealed critical gaps in communication, safety, and situational awareness. From there, collaborative design sprints led to concepts centered on wearable technology and smart tracking systems, solutions designed to enhance visibility, streamline communication, and create a safer, more responsive work environment.

The team then analyzed the biomechanics of workers’ repetitive motions. By identifying high-risk movements and strain patterns, our biomedical engineers applied AI tools to pinpoint where injuries were most likely to occur. These findings help prevent workplace injuries before they happen.

Real-time intelligence for manufacturing

The resulting product, AiM (Artificial Intelligence for Manufacturing), bridges human insight and machine precision, enabling real-time decision-making for a safer and more efficient workplace.

The AiM system integrates smart wearables, a robust mesh network, and a cloud-based dashboard to deliver visibility and communication into worker well-being, environmental conditions, plus operational workflows. Its centralized platform utilizes AI to analyze collected data, delivering actionable insights for both frontline teams and management. The result is a responsive ecosystem powered by human input and machine intelligence.

As technology evolves, AiM’s modular architecture supports future expansion, including integrated touchscreens, additional sensors, cameras, and deeper AI analytics.

The results

AiM is a fully integrated, edge-to-cloud system designed to capture real-time data on worker movement, location, and productivity. With connected wearables and actionable dashboard insights, AiM equips industrial teams with the tools to monitor, predict, and respond to dynamic conditions, supporting safer, smarter, and more resilient operations.

The AiM system completed successful pilot testing in a leading manufacturing plant, resulting in measurable improvements in worker productivity, safety, and wellness.
