Frequently Asked Questions
Considering an innovation or product development project? Our FAQs answer common questions about working with Nottingham Spirk. Explore the answers to better understand our approach and how we can help turn opportunities into market-ready products.
Working with Nottingham Spirk
Nottingham Spirk works with companies ranging from Fortune 1,000 organizations and established middle-market companies to funded venture companies. Our client-partners span consumer, medical, commercial and industrial, food service, packaging, and national security. Whether you have an early-stage idea, an existing product that needs to evolve, or a technical or commercialization challenge, we tailor our team and approach to your needs.
Absolutely. We can operate as an extension of your engineering organization, fill a specific capability gap, add resources when internal teams are constrained, or assemble a multidisciplinary team around a complex challenge. Engagements can range from a single engineering discipline to a complete integrated development team.
The earlier, the better. Involving Nottingham Spirk early allows us to consider user needs, market opportunity, technical feasibility, design, IP, cost, and commercialization from the beginning. That said, we work with client-partners at every stage, from exploring an opportunity to redesigning an existing product, solving a technical challenge, or preparing a product for commercialization.
By partnering with Nottingham Spirk, you are leveraging our years of experience helping bring hundreds of innovative products to market. While we don't invest or raise capital, a partnership with us gives your potential investors confidence that you are working with a well-established innovation firm with a 95% commercialization track record.
Not every engagement starts with a new product. Our engineers frequently work with existing products and technologies to troubleshoot technical issues, improve performance or reliability, reduce cost, redesign obsolete components, add connectivity, update electronics or firmware, improve manufacturability, or prepare a design for production.
Our Process
Our Vertical Innovation® process brings the disciplines needed to develop and commercialize a product together. Depending on the project, that can include discovery & validation, design, engineering, connected & IoT, prototyping, and commercialization. Rather than working in isolated stages, our multidisciplinary teams collaborate throughout development, allowing insights, design, engineering, and manufacturing considerations to inform decisions along the way.
Traditional product development can involve multiple firms or departments, with a project moving from research to design to engineering and eventually manufacturing. Vertical Innovation® brings these disciplines together under one roof. Our teams work collaboratively throughout development, reducing handoffs and keeping the focus on the complete product, from the initial opportunity through commercialization.
Every project is different. Timeline depends on factors such as product complexity, technology, regulatory requirements, prototyping, manufacturing, and the starting point of the project. Our integrated approach is designed to keep development moving by having the necessary disciplines work together from the beginning. A typical innovation journey takes approximately 12 months, while a project involving augmenting your internal staff can be as short as a few days.
Yes. Commercialization is part of our Vertical Innovation® process, not simply the final step. Depending on the project, our team can support design for manufacturability, sourcing, manufacturing partner evaluation, production release, regulatory documentation, packaging, and manufacturing liaison. Considering these requirements throughout development helps ensure a product is designed not only to work, but to be manufactured and brought to market.
IP & Ownership
Intellectual property is assigned to the client-partner. Our team considers IP opportunities throughout development and can support invention disclosures and patent filings. Specific terms regarding ownership and pre-existing IP are defined in each engagement agreement.
Protecting client-partner information is an important part of our working relationships. Our multidisciplinary teams collaborate closely while maintaining confidentiality around proprietary concepts, research, designs, and technical information. Specific confidentiality obligations, including nondisclosure requirements and the treatment of proprietary information, are established through the agreements governing each engagement.
Why Invest in Innovation?
Innovation helps companies create new sources of growth, respond to changing customer needs, and stay competitive as markets evolve. It can mean developing an entirely new product, improving an existing one, entering an adjacent market, or finding a better way to solve a customer problem. The most effective innovation connects customer needs with business strategy and a clear path to commercialization.
Innovation can help companies identify opportunities beyond their existing products and markets. By combining customer insights, market knowledge, technology, and design, companies can uncover unmet needs and develop new products, services, or business models. Nottingham Spirk works with client-partners to identify opportunities and turn them into commercially viable solutions.
Markets, technologies, and customer expectations continually change. Companies that focus only on optimizing existing products can miss emerging opportunities or find themselves reacting after competitors have moved ahead. Investing in innovation creates a structured way to explore what is next while continuing to strengthen the core business.
Innovation doesn’t have to mean betting everything on an unproven idea. A disciplined process can reduce risk by validating customer needs, market opportunity, technical feasibility, IP potential, and commercial viability before significant resources are committed. Nottingham Spirk brings these considerations together early in the development process, helping client-partners make informed decisions about where and how to invest.
Speed of Innovation
In competitive markets, getting a new product to customers sooner can create opportunities for growth, strengthen market position, and help companies respond to changing customer needs. For larger organizations, product development can slow down as projects move between departments, teams, and outside partners. A more integrated approach can help maintain momentum from concept through commercialization.
Our vertically integrated approach is designed to accelerate the path from concept to commercialization, with all the disciplines needed for product development under one roof. Our dedicated, multidisciplinary teams work across discovery & validation, design, engineering, connected & IoT, prototyping, and commercialization. rather than passing projects between separate organizations. This reduces handoffs and miscommunication while allowing decisions to be made collaboratively throughout development.
Our in-house rapid prototyping capabilities further accelerate development. Teams can quickly build and test mechanical, electronic, and PCB prototypes, evaluate designs, identify issues, and make improvements without waiting on outside resources
Large organizations often have the resources to innovate but can face internal silos, competing priorities, and limited bandwidth. Working with an experienced external innovation partner can add dedicated resources and multidisciplinary expertise without requiring companies to build an entirely new team. Nottingham Spirk’s dedicated project teams can work alongside existing organizations to move strategic innovation initiatives forward while internal teams remain focused on the core business.
Working with National Security
Yes. Nottingham Spirk works with federal agencies, defense contractors, and mission-driven organizations on complex engineering and product development challenges. Our government clients have included the U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, and U.S. Navy. Our work spans embedded systems, connected products, engineering, prototyping, and end-to-end product development.
Nottingham Spirk maintains credentials and processes that support work involving government and defense programs, including ITAR registration, SAM.gov registration, and CMMC Level 2 processes. Our engineering team applies these requirements to programs involving government and military contractors, allowing NS to support projects with different levels of team involvement and security requirements.
Cybersecurity is considered throughout the product development process, particularly for connected and mission-critical products. Our engineering capabilities include secure connected-product development, embedded systems, firmware, wireless design, and data integration. We consider security alongside performance, reliability, manufacturability, and other requirements from the earliest stages of development rather than treating it as an afterthought.
Yes. Nottingham Spirk can provide targeted engineering and product development expertise to complement an existing team. Our capabilities can be integrated into a larger program or provided as focused support in areas such as embedded systems, PCB design, firmware, mechanical engineering, prototyping, and connected products. This flexible model allows organizations to add specialized capabilities while maintaining their existing program structure.
For programs involving classified information, Nottingham Spirk can provide cleared engineering personnel who interface directly with the customer and serve as a technical bridge to our broader multidisciplinary engineering team.
The cleared team member can understand the program requirements, identify work that can appropriately be performed at the unclassified level, and coordinate those activities with Nottingham Spirk’s broader engineering, design, embedded systems, firmware, electronics, and prototyping resources.
This approach allows customers to access the breadth and versatility of the Nottingham Spirk team while maintaining appropriate boundaries around classified information.
